ROBOTS

In Team Awa we have been working with Robots. We have used Dash, Beebot, Sphero, Bloxels, Osmo and Scratch to learn about coding and programming robots.

We also made animations of our own robots on an adventure in a maze. Here are some of our finished animations.

Garden To Table Week 1 and 2

We have had 2 great weeks on the Garden to Table programme. Belinda and Amy our parent experts have been amazing and the children are absolutely loving it. Week 1 we made hummus, guacamole and herb scones which were served with bread and fresh veges. The children weeded the garden and planted some veges.

This week in the kitchen they made carrot muffins, beetroot dip, pumpkin dip and flatbread. Served of course with fresh veges. Some of the children are trying food they have never eaten before and are enjoying it. Nothing but positive comments and happy children.

Thank you so much to our amazing volunteers and teacher aides, without you we would not be able to do this programme!

Here are some photos from the last 2 weeks.

Up, Up and Away Hot Air Balloons Display

Matua Ken, Bev and Sarah have put our wonderful hot air balloons up on the wall this morning.
Here is a video of our display.

Team Awa Movies

Mitchel, Brooke S, Denym, Leonor and Ricci-Lee filmed some videos about a catapult they made. Mrs Clarke put it together in IMovie. Some natural actors in Team Awa.

Feedback from our judge Tim Foley:
Team Awa – Can We Catapult It?
  • Very clear instructions
  • Good to see both far and close up demonstrations of the catapult
  • Funny infomercial moment near the end worked well
  • Bloopers were a really nice touch and a great way to finish!

Here is our second movie School Busters. Mrs Clarke and some wonderful planners wrote the script. We used lots of different actors to present parts. How wonderful are our 2 main presenters Georgia and Fin!

Feedback from our judge Tim Foley:
Team Awa – School Busters – 3rd PLACE OVERALL
  • Great take on Mythbusters
  • Energy of ‘introducers’/presenters was fantastic and helped ‘sell’ the movie
  • Lots of elements at play: Music, editing, presenting
  • This would have one Best Original Score category if we had it like they do at The Oscars!

Collaborating with Lego

Our School was very lucky to receive a generous amount of Lego from LEGO. The year 4's had a competition - Boys VS Girls to build some Lego. They had to work in small groups to put their part of lego together. It was a great collaborative, problem-solving task. Here are some photos of them work together. We hope to finish them off this week.

Collaborative Bird Wings

We made a collaborative bird in Team Awa. We each designed and created our own feather.
We drew our patterns with chalk then went over the top with white crayon. We chose complimentary colours to dye over the white crayon so the patterns stood out.

Here is a video we made of each of us with wings.

Here is a photo of our bird on the wall.

Kites

As part of our theme of Up, Up and Away we made some kites. We used flax sticks, plastic bags, cardboard, newspaper and tape. After that we went out and flew them. Some were more successful than others. We had to run fast to get our kites into the air.

After flying them we were inspired to write poems using verbs. We were able to choose the style of poem we wrote.

Science Fair 2017

On Wednesday we had our school Science Fair. The children have worked very hard over the last 3 weeks to learn about Science Investigations and the Scientific Method. They chose their own investigation questions and planned a fair test to complete on their chosen topic. They learnt about the importance of having constants and a variable when carrying out a fair test. Check out our individual blogs for reflections on our learning.

Here are our finished Science Investigation boards.

Here are some photos of us sharing our learning at Science Fair.

Dr Seuss Day

Everyone had a great day at Dr Seuss Day. The day began with a walk to the daycare and play centre to show off our costumes. We had Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Fox in Socks, Cindy-Loo-Who, Duck from the Lorax, characters from Whoville, and Truffula Trees.

Then we split into mixed groups and completed different tasks related to Dr Seuss and his books. Some children from Team Awa also did a Breakout about Dr Seuss.
